Shark spotted close to Kaanapali shore.
A shark that swam right up to shore Tuesday led hotel managers at a Kaanapali resort to clear the ocean, but state and county officials said they were unable to confirm sightings reported Tuesday and Wednesday. A California visitor who photographed the shark as it thrashed in the shallow water close to the beach said he didn’t think it was a major issue either. Sivulka said he and a friend, Gary Lewis, were on the eighth-floor balcony at the hotel when Lewis pointed out what appeared to be a shark swimming close to the beach where three other visitors were in the water. He said there were no obvious markings to help identify the shark, which he estimated to be 6 to 7 feet long, as he observed it from the height. Both Sivulka and Lewis noted the shark had a prominent but light colored dorsal fin. Its tail was also long and light colored. Sivulka said the shark appeared to be feeding on fish it had chased in close to shore. |
