Turtle dies from shark bite injuries off Kihei
An injured green sea turtle struggled to shore at Kihei's Kalama Park on Wednesday morning with a 13-inch-wide, half moon-shaped chunk ripped from its shell, apparently by a tiger shark. The turtle washed ashore within 200 yards of Cove Park.
The turtle was reported to the South Maui Sea Turtle Stranding Network office around 10 a.m. But the animal, which is an endangered species, died from its wounds before help could arrive.
The attack came from behind, and left the turtle with only three flippers. The remaining portion of the turtle weighed about 130 pounds. Its shell measured 33 inches from front to back and it was estimated to be about 40 years old or older. Numerous tumors were on the turtle's shoulder, neck and around both eyes.
