|
State conservation enforcement
officers reported sighting as many as nine sharks in the clear waters of Honolua
Bay on Saturday and kept the beaches in the area closed to swimmers.
Large sharks were first reported in Honolua Bay on Wednesday, after someone dumped hundreds of dead and dying akule in the bay. Awo said enforcement officers are continuing to look for a man who was reported to have been fishing for akule in Honolua Bay before the shark sightings began. The area around the Honolua-Moku-leia Marine Life Conservation District has been closed to swimmers, surfers and snorkelers since the sharks were first sighted about 10:15 a.m. Wednesday feeding on the dead fish. On Friday, several large sharks were sighted off D.T. Fleming Beach Park at Honokahua Bay, about a half mile from Honolua, and the beach park was shut down to swimming. Most of the dead akule were gone, but the scent of the dead fish may have continued to be an attraction. By late afternoon enforcement officers at the scene reported that there still were four or five sharks in the bay. |
